Animal, rural and environmental sciences schools liaison

We're dedicated to connecting with and supporting schools and colleges with their CEIAG activities. Our team works closely with schools, sixth forms and colleges across the midlands. We've developed a reputation for providing a professional, informative and valuable service to their students and staff.

Meet our School Liaison Officer

Lorna Wilson-Shorten stands in the sun outdoors, with some dark green bushes behind her.

We aim to raise awareness of, and promote careers in, the animal, equine, environmental or land-based industries. We achieve this through a range of activities that include:

  • in-school careers events
  • careers assemblies
  • interactive sessions
  • tours and experience days on site at Brackenhurst.

The sessions we deliver aim to:

  • enthuse young people
  • help them make informed decisions about their future, and
  • support them in making a successful transition into further and higher education.

Lorna Wilson-Shorten is our School Liaison Officer. She'll be the main point of contact for further education activity.

I bring a unique aspect to the role, as I previously studied at Brackenhurst for college and my university degree. I have a personal understanding of the range of courses available, and what it's really like to be a student on such a beautiful campus. Brack has been my home for several years now, so I'm very excited to promote and share that experience to prospective students all across the UK.

Our offer

We can attend your careers event and provide information about Brackenhurst's courses to your students and their parents. The types of events we've supported in the past include:

  • careers fairs
  • networking events
  • parents' evenings
  • mock interviews.

We'll represent college and university courses. We'll focus on raising awareness of future opportunities and careers in the animal, equine or land-based industries.

We can deliver engaging careers education talks at your school. These help students to consider where specific subject areas can take them in the future. Linked with the courses offered at Brackenhurst Campus, we currently have talks on:

  • careers in the environmental and animal sectors
  • careers in animal science
  • careers in conservation and wildlife.

Delivery times are flexible — between 30 and 60 minutes. We can deliver them to a small group, or assembly style.

If you're interested in a subject area that isn't listed above, then please get in touch to discuss further.

Each July we welcome regional schools to bring a group of Year 10 students and spend a day with us.

During the day, students will get to spend time exploring our beautiful campus. They'll get a hands-on feel for the subjects they could study with us.

Within the first academic term of the year, we also provide experience days to Year 11 students. Unlike our Year 10 taster days, the experience days focus on the subject that interests your students. If Year 10 students have previously attended our July taster day, they're welcome to attend our experience days as they progress into Year 11. The experience days are more hands-on and specific to their area of interest.

Our taster and experience days are completely free of charge. All you need to do is get your group to and from us on the day.

We can accommodate group sizes of up to 15 students plus accompanying members of staff. Group sizes are limited, so please register your interest early. We recommend bringing students who'd really benefit from spending a day at Brackenhurst. It's particularly suitable for those who enjoy science subjects and are exploring careers options.

We run a range of interactive subject-specific days for college and sixth form students. These offer an insight into what it's like to study a certain subject at Brackenhurst Campus. They'll also give your students something extra to mention in their personal statements. Upcoming dates are currently to be confirmed.

Bring a group of students for a tour around the Brackenhurst Campus. Tours last for around one hour and will visit key areas of the campus.

As we show you around, we'll also talk about our courses and our entry requirements.

The maximum number of students we can accommodate on a tour is fifteen.

We welcome school and college groups to attend our general open days throughout the year.

Please check our open day page for the latest dates and to book your place.
